Taking your dog to France from the UK
A dog from England, Scotland or Wales enters France on an animal health certificate signed by an official veterinarian, valid for entry for 10 days after it is issued. A pet passport is not accepted. Wait at least 21 full days after the rabies vaccine before you arrive, and plan the tapeworm treatment for the way home.

The rules, one by one
Get your dog microchipped
SourceRead more
The microchip meets ISO standards 11784 and 11785, and your vet fits it before the rabies vaccine or on the same day. If it comes after, your dog needs vaccinating again. A chip that does not meet ISO standards means bringing your own reader. Your vet writes the chip number in the animal health certificate, with a date before the vaccination. A legible tattoo applied on or before 3 July 2011 is still accepted, as long as the vaccination came after the tattoo.

Get your dog vaccinated against rabies

Your vet vaccinates your dog once the microchip is in and your dog is at least 12 weeks old. After the first vaccination, wait at least 21 full days before you arrive in France: day 1 is the day after the vaccination. A booster given with no break in cover needs no new wait. If the vaccine expires during the trip, the certificate no longer works for onward travel or for your return home.

A dog enters France at 16 weeks old at the earliest: French customs do not authorize dogs under 16 weeks old, even vaccinated against rabies. Your dog must also be at least 12 weeks old at the rabies vaccination, plus the wait after it. France accepts no unvaccinated animal under 12 weeks, with no exception.

An official veterinarian (OV) in Great Britain signs the certificate. Ask your vet whether they can issue it, or for help finding an OV. It can only be issued once the 21 full days after the rabies vaccine have passed, and it is valid for entry for 10 days, counting the issue day as day 1, so the latest arrival is 9 days after the issue date. On a sea crossing, those 10 days are extended by the length of the journey. You need a new certificate for each trip, with a copy of the vaccination attached, and it covers up to 5 pets. The original travels with your dog. It stays valid for 6 months for onward travel in the EU and for your return to Great Britain. A certificate issued before 1 October 2026 on the old model is accepted until 31 March 2027.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my dog's pet passport to travel from the UK to France?
No. If you live in England, Scotland or Wales, you cannot use a pet passport to enter the EU, even one issued in an EU country. Your dog needs an animal health certificate for each trip.
How long is the animal health certificate valid for France?
It is valid for entry for 10 days, counting the day it is issued as day 1, and that period is extended by the length of a sea crossing. It then stays valid for 6 months for onward travel in the EU and for your return to Great Britain, unless your dog's rabies vaccine expires during the trip.
Does my dog need a rabies blood test to go to France from the UK?
No. Great Britain is listed in Annex II of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/636, so a dog from Great Britain enters France without a rabies antibody test. The rabies vaccine itself is still required, and the certificate is issued at least 21 full days after it.
Does my dog need tapeworm treatment to go to France from the UK?
No. The treatment before entry applies only to dogs going to Finland, Ireland, Malta, Northern Ireland and Norway. You do need it before you come home: a vet treats your dog no less than 24 hours and no more than 5 days before you enter Great Britain.
Will my dog be quarantined when we come back to the UK?
Not if you follow the rules for entering Great Britain. If you do not, your dog may be put into quarantine for up to 4 months, or refused entry if you travelled by sea.
