Apple waives Animalert's annual developer fee on the grounds of our non-profit status.

Our collaboration

Apple's Developer Program is the gateway to distributing an app on iOS and iPadOS. It costs 99 dollars a year for a regular developer, which is a rounding error at company scale but becomes an awkward line item for a young non-profit.

Apple has been offering, on application, a fee waiver for eligible non-profits for a few years now. Animalert was accepted onto it in 2024. The dollar amount is modest, but the gesture matters: it states that an app that is 100% free, with no in-app purchase, no advertising and no hidden monetisation, owes nothing to the platform that distributes it. Apple's whole business model rests on a commission on transactions; the programme explicitly recognises that there is a category of public-interest apps that legitimately sit outside that frame. For a young non-profit, that is a kind of recognition no cheque replaces.

The other side of the partnership is access to the standard programme resources: TestFlight to distribute beta builds to our volunteers, App Store Connect to manage the store listings, and the bug-reporting tools that go straight to Apple when we hit unexpected system behaviour. Beyond that, we have occasional access to 1-on-1 calls with Apple product teams to challenge our UI and UX choices, and to expedited review when we ship a new release. The fact that those touchpoints are open to us is, in itself, a signal of how seriously the project is taken.
